If you’re going to be a car or base camper (one location), then you have a vast selection of outdoor cooking equipment to choose from since you won’t be as limited to size and weight.  Large cooking stoves (and others like Coleman camping gear) are typically used and they are usually heated by propane or gas.  You can also bring your home cooking and eating utensils since you won’t have to worry about carrying them on your back everywhere you go.  A word of caution though, you might want to purchase separate cooking and eating utensils for camping.  Utensils have a tendency to get lost or burned/melted over flames.. two things you probably don’t want happening to your nice kitchen equipment.

If you’re planning to hike or backpack, you’ll need to be more selective in your outdoor cooking equipment.  Size and weight become a huge issue.  While open fire is typically the choice for outdoor cooking, making a fire isn’t always an option.  A small propane canister and cooking element are the perfect choice, they are small and lightweight too!  You’ll also need the perfect utensils too.  Many companies make the perfect hikers (or backpackers) cooking and eating utensils.  Small, compact and lightweight is the name of the game when it comes to staying on the go.
